God Spare Life, an Autobiography of The Nation’s First Black Female Orthopaedic Surgeon, is Published by WME Books
Rochester, NY – (July 17, 2007) The eagerly awaited autobiography of noted surgeon and
educator, Dr. Claudia Lynn Thomas, has just been released and
made available to the public through Windsor Media Enterprises (WME
Books). The release of God Spare Life follows a series of
private readings and national appearances by the esteemed
author.
Through vivid recollection and storytelling, Dr. Thomas
reveals true-life examples of the gender, race, class, faith and
mortality issues this country struggles with to this day. “My
life can be perceived as a series of three major storms,” the
author reveals. “I rode out the squalls of my coming of age as a
college student in the 1960s; while trapped in the jaws of a
demonic hurricane as a practicing surgeon on the Island of St.
Thomas, I clung to the arms of a sofa and prayed, ‘God Spare
Life!’; but nothing I had endured so far could match the storm
of the desperate illness that threatened my very life…”
“Dr. Thomas’ book is an inspiration to women of all ages. She
proves that if you are strong, focused, and believe in a higher
power, you can be successful,” proclaims Yolanda Caraway,
President and CEO of the Caraway Group, a national consulting
firm specializing in diversity awareness.
Lena West, Founder and CEO of xynoMedia Technology, declares,
“Dr. Claudia Thomas writes with the will of a prize fighter and
the enlightenment and soul of a spiritual guru.”
Reaction to God Spare Life is always over the top because
this is a story about humanity, strength of character, and
heartfelt faith. There is drama and tension; excitement and
amazement; from the racial issues of the turbulent 1960s and
early 1970s (including her role in the
1969 occupation of the
Main Building at Vassar College); to overcoming challenges in
Dr. Thomas’ fight for survival during Hurricane Hugo – a
Category 5 hurricane; and then, her courageous fight for
survival, battling a deadly disease that cared little who she
was.
Notes Dr. Elizabeth Daniels, Vassar College Historian, “A
fascinating book, and a moving account of those days at Vassar.”
“I wish everyone could read Dr. Thomas’ story,” says Connie
Gonitzke, Resource Development Director at the National
Foundation for Transplants.
Yvonne DiVita, publisher and editor of this inspirational
story, says, “Dr. Thomas is an exceptional woman. A woman of
science, but also, a woman of faith. Her story provides an
historical perspective of issues that women of color endure,
even to this day. But, most impressive is story narrative that
reveals a glimpse into the heart of a Black woman who has
endured, in one lifetime, more than most of us can imagine. WME
Books is extremely proud to be the publisher of this book.”
