Susan B. Anthony Museum Shop Features New Book From WME Books

Rochester, NY – (August 14, 2007) The Museum Shop at the Susan B. Anthony House is currently featuring a new book released by Rochester publisher WME Books. God Spare Life is the autobiography of noted surgeon and educator, Dr. Claudia Lynn Thomas, who toured the visitor’s center, the Anthony home, and the historic district park with the statues of Anthony and Frederick Douglass in late June, during a visit to Rochester.

“As the first woman to enter the Yale orthopaedic surgery program and the first African American woman to become an orthopaedic surgeon in the U.S., Dr. Thomas has much in common with both Anthony and Douglass,” noted Tom Collins, VP Production at WME Books.

“Our location in Rochester, with its historic connections to the themes in this book and its modern status as the center of the print-on-demand publishing industry were highlighted in our pitch to Dr. Thomas when we first met her.”

God Spare Life covers huge territory and is written in breathtaking detail. The author shares her remarkable story of growing up in NYC, facing the racial issues of the turbulent 1960’s and early 1970’s (including her involvement in the 1969 occupation of the Main Building at Vassar College); of overcoming challenges in education and culture to become the first Black female orthopedic surgeon in the United States; of her fight for survival during Hurricane Hugo – a Category 5 hurricane that hit St. Thomas Island; and of her second fight for survival as she overcame a deadly kidney disease (including a kidney transplant).

“A fascinating book, and a moving account of those days at Vassar,” notes Dr. Elizabeth Daniels, Vassar College Historian. “ I wish everyone could read Dr. Thomas’ story,” exclaims Connie Gonitzke, Resource Development Director at the National Foundation for Transplants.
